Travellers Guide : When To Go

South Africa's Western Cape climate is usually described as Mediteranean in nature - warm, mild summers (usually around 26°C or 79°F), and wet, chilly winters (around 5°C or 41°F).

The following information should be treated as a guide only - Africa's Gods seem to sometimes change their minds and take everyone by surprise - but in Peak Season you should be assured that any out of the ordinary weather soon disappears and it's back to normal again.

Best Time To Go
South Africa is an all year round destination. However there are certain regions which are more popular in certain seasons. The Northern regions are good destinations in the winter months as the game viewing is at it's best and the temperatures are very mild (maximum of 20 - 23 degrees Celsius) however they are very popular in the summer months as well when temperatures can rise to 28 - 30 degrees or even higher. There is very little winter rainfall. The Southern regions are Summer destinations with low Summer rainfall and temperatures reaching up to 28 or 30 degrees or higher on perfect days.

Tourism Seasons
Traditionally the peak season is from October to the end of March, and the availability is at a premium during these seasons, so it is very necessary to book accommodation and make other arrangements in advance. As South Africa is gaining popularity as a tourist destination, these seasonal differences are not as marked as they previously were.
