Travellers Guide : Getting Around

South Africa is geared towards travel by private car, with some very good highways but limited and expensive public transport. If you want to cover a lot of the country in a limited time, hiring or buying a car might be necessary. If you don't have much money but have time to spare, hitching is often possible (but not highly recommended), and if you don't mind a modicum of discomfort, there's an extensive network of minibus taxis, buses and trains.

Buses
Translux buses operate on major routes and will usually be pretty comfortable. The poor cousin Transtate buses run just about everywhere else. Transtate were originally intended to carry black workers to the cities, so they are cheap, run interesting routes and stop just about everywhere.

Road Conditions
You will find driving in South Africa easy to adapt to, with sign posting in English, driving on the left and well maintained roads. An international driving licence is required. The age limits are 23 - 70 years. You must have held a licence for at least five years. There are a number of toll roads in South Africa. You will receive clear indication signs before reaching a toll station. Payment may be made at an attended booth. A word of caution regarding overtaking or "undertaking" on the changing lanes inside. This is not illegal in South Africa and is a common practice. When travelling on any highways, be aware of cars on your inside. Speed limits on the highways are 120 km/hr and 60 km/hr in the towns and cities.
