Moutain Hiking / Biking
The Harkerville Cycle
Routes, situated between Knysna and
Plettenberg Bay, offer an unrivalled playground.
Four distinctly colour coded routes (12km, 14km,
15km and 24km) have been laid through
indigenous forest, tree plantations and coastal
fynbos.
Petrus-se-brand Cycle Route covers
24km and is suitable for riders of average fitness.
Due to the fall in elevation, it is recommended that
you start from 'north' to "south'
Diepwalle to
Garden of Eden. The trail passes many old yellow
woods and the route offers quite a contrast: after
riding beneath the forest canopy for 10km, the
cool depths give way to warm, bright sunshine.
On winter days the difference is especially marked.
The Homtini Cycle Route is named after the
Khoi word meaning 'difficult passage ' It refers to
the narrow gorges of the river, so be prepared for a
tough challenge. The start and finish point of the
19km circular route is Krisjan-se-nek picnic site.
You ride through some high forest before breaking
away onto a single track. Expect a rapid descent to
the forest margin and, on a hot day, take a plunge
in the shallow water hole before tackling the
test ridge climb to Portland Heights (310m). At
the top you are rewarded with one of the most
spectacular views in the Garden Route.
The Knysna Oyster Route is through private tree plantations and on land owned by SAFCOL. A long distance route (35km), it begins and ends at the Concordia Training Centre.
